Moto 360 (2015 Model) Review

Lisa Gade reviews the second generation Motorola Android Wear smartwatch, the Moto 360, released in the fall of 2015. The new Moto 360 improves quite a bit on the stylish but very much first gen original Moto 360. It has a brighter and more colorful LCD touch screen, a faster 1.2 GHz Snapdragon 400 CPU and new styling. This round watch is very attractive and even better it’s available in two sizes: 42mm and 46mm. The smaller size is more in line with analog watch sizes while the larger model is as big as the first gen 360. The watch runs the latest version of Android Wear based on Android OS 5.1, and it can sync to Android smartphones as well as the iPhone, though the feature set is much stronger when paired with Android. It has WiFi to extend the range between phone and watch. The watch is IP67 dust and water resistant and you can get it with a leather or metal band. The price starts at $299 and goes up to $399. You order a customized model via Moto Maker. Like all Android Wear watches, the moto 360 supports voice commands and touch input and it has vibration for notifications but no speaker audio.

iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus Review

Lisa Gade reviews the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, Apple’s new phones for 2015. Both phones are nearly identical to the previous iPhone 6 generation models in terms of casing and design, but the internals have changed quite a bit. They’re .2 mm thicker and a few grams heavier to accommodate the new 3D Touch display that’s pressure sensitive for new interactions and for drawing as well. These iPhones run on considerably faster thanks to the new 1.86 GHz Apple A9 dual core, 64 bit CPU with 2 gigs of RAM and your choice of 16, 64 or 128 gigs storage. The front FaceTime camera is 5MP and it can use the front display as a flash. The rear Sight 12MP camera can shoot 4K video (only the 6s Plus has OIS, optical image stabilization). Both front and back cameras have an f/2.2 lens. The iPhone 6s and 6s Plus have 4G LTE with WiFi calling and VoLTE support, WiFi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.2 and GPS. The iPhone 6s has a 1344 x 750 IPS Retina Display and the iPhone 6s Plus has a 1920 x 1080 IPS Retina display. Price remains the same as past years, with the iPhone 6s starting at $649 and the iPhone 6s Plus starting at $749. They’re available in space gray, silver, gold and a new color called rose gold that looks mighty pink.

Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 4.7" Review

Lisa Gade reviews the Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 4.7” model. We reviewed the 5.5” version a few months ago, and as you might expect, this is the small hands and small pockets edition with a 4.7” IPS 1280 x 720 “Technicolor” display. The specs are a bit lower than the bigger Idol 3, but so is the price, and this unlocked GSM 4G LTE phone is a bargain at $179 full retail (no contracts, no payment plans required). It runs Android 5.0 Lollipop on the 1.2 GHz Snapdragon 410 quad core CPU with 1.5 gigs of RAM and 16 gigs of storage. It has a microSD card slot, single band WiFi 802.11n, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC and a GPS. Like the bigger Idol 3, it has front-facing JBL speakers that are quite loud, and you get a set of JBL branded earbuds in the box. The phone has a non-removable 2,000 mAh battery and the same good 13MP front and 5MP rear cameras as the Idol 5.5”. It’s available direct from Alcatel’s website and Amazon in the US. Its LTE bands support AT&T and T-Mobile as well as several smaller GSM carriers, but it’s not compatible with Verizon or Sprint.

Huawei Watch Review

Lisa Gade reviews the Huawei Watch, one of the first new generation Android Wear smartwatches. It features WiFi, iOS compatibility, an attractive 316L stainless steel casing and a round design. The watch starts at $349 with a leather band, and there’s a black stainless model with stainless black link band for $450 and a rose gold model that sells for $699 to $799. We look at the base model, and all models have the same internals, heart rate sensor, sapphire glass display cover. The watch has the usual 1.2 GHz Snapdragon 400 CPU with 4 gigs of flash storage and 512 megs of RAM. It has a 300 mAh battery and comes with a magnetic charger. The AMOLED 42mm, 1.4” display is colorful and sharp and it has 286 PPI pixel density. Like all smartwatches, it requires a companion smartphone, since it basically acts as a second screen for your phone. It’s compatible with all brands of Android phones as well as the iPhone.

iPad mini 4 Review

Lisa Gade reviews the iPad mini 4, Apple’s latest 8” tablet launched in Sept. 2015. The mini 4 has a 7.9” IPS “Retina” display with 2048 x 1536 resolution. It moves up to the Apple A8 dual core CPU clocked at 1.5 GHz with 2 gigs of RAM. As per usual you have 3 storage choices: 16, 64 or 128 gigs. It’s available with WiFi only or with WiFi + cellular 4G LTE for $130 more. The tablet has dual band WiFi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.2 and cellular models have a GPS. It has Apple’s Touch ID fingerprint scanner that you can use for secure purchases in the app store, iTunes and in web-based purchases. The iPad mini 4 has a front 1.2MP FaceTime camera and a rear 8MP iSight camera with f/2.4 lens and 1080p video recording. The tablet is the thinnest and lightest mini yet, and it’s 6.1mm thick and weighs 10.5 ounce/298grams. The price starts at $399 for the WiFi 16 gig model in your choice of space gray, silver or gold.

Dell Venue 10 7000 Review

Lisa Gade reviews the Dell Venue 10, a 10.5” Android tablet with an excellent optional backlit Bluetooth keyboard. We look at the Venue 10 model 7040 that has a stunning AMOLED 2560 x 1600 display and the quad core Intel Atom Moorefield Z3580 quad core 64 bit CPU clocked at 1.33 GHz with Boost to 2.33 GHz. The 1.3 lb (597g) tablet has an interesting design with a barrel at the end that houses stereo speakers and a 7,000 mAh battery. The barrel also acts as the hinge area for the optional $129 keyboard. The Venue 10 has 2 gigs of RAM, 16 or 32 gigs of storage, a microSD card slot, USB host and it runs Android 5.1 Lollipop. It supports Miracast wireless display and it has WiFi 802.111ac, Bluetooth 4.1 and a GPS. Like the Venue 8 7000, it has a rear 8MP camera with 2 companion 720p cameras for Intel’s depth sensing technology and a front 2MP camera with 3 mics for video chat. The price starts at $499.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 Review

Lisa Gade reviews the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2, Samsung’s high end Android tablet for the fall of 2015. The tablet is impressively thin at 5.6mm and light at 13.7 oz. (389g). The S2 tablet is available in 9.7 and 8 inch sizes and we look at the 9.7” model. It has a really lovely and sharp 9.7” Super AMOLED display with extremely high color gamut and high brightness. It has a 4:3 aspect ratio and a resolution of a2048 x 1536 like the iPad Air 2 with which it competes. That makes it great for web browsing, reading, word processing and gaming, but you’ll see black bars on widescreen movies and TV shows. The tablet runs Android 5.1.1 Lollipop on the 1.9GHz Exynos 5433 Octa-core 64 bit CPU with 3 gigs of RAM and your choice of 32 or 64 gigs of internal storage. It has a microSD card slot, WiFi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.1 BLE and a GPS. Carriers will offer variants that also have LTE 4G. The 9.7 is $499 and the 8 inch is $399.

Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 15 Review

Lisa Gade reviews the Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 15, the biggest Yoga in Lenovo’s business oriented line of Windows convertible or 2-in-1 Ultrabooks. The Yoga 15 can be used as a laptop, tablet or in tent and presentation modes. It has Lenovo’s Lift n’ Lock backlit keyboard and a 15.6” full HD IPS touch screen. The laptop runs on Intel ULV Ultrabook dual core CPUs and our unit has the 2.2 GHz Core i5-5200U. It has 2 RAM slots for up to 16 gigs of RAM and a 2.5” drive bay for an HDD or an SSD. It has switchable NVIDIA 840M dedicated graphics with 2GB DDR3. The ThinkPad Yoga 15 weighs 5 lbs. and is 0.84” thick, and it has an aluminum lid and magnesium alloy internal frame. The quick ship Core i5 model sells for $849 and our review unit with 8 gigs of RAM, Core i5 and a 180 gig SSD retails for around$1,000.

Origin PC EON15 X Review

Lisa Gade reviews the Origin PC EON15-X, a 15.6” gaming and pro apps laptop with desktop CPUs and NVIDIA GTX 970M and 980M graphics card options. Origin PC is a “boutique” brand, or small build-to-order maker of gaming laptops and desktops, and it was founded by the same folks behind Alienware before Dell bought Alienware years ago. The laptop is shipped in a wooden crate, mostly because that’s cool. The EON15-X starts at $1,737, and our very high end configuration sells for $2,739. The machine is available with Intel Haswell E quad core desktop CPUs, and ours has the top of the line i7-4790K 4.0 GHz Devil’s Canyon over-clockable CPU (Skylake of course is in the future). The CPU is socketed and thus upgradable. The video card is in an MXM slot, so it too is upgradable. Despite the powerful internals, the machine is 1.4” thick (not bad for gaming notebook) and it runs fairly cool, though not terribly quiet. Our config has 16 gigs of RAM (32 is max), an M.2 240 gig PCIe SSD, 1 TB fast HDD, and dual band Intel WiFi AC7265. A 3 zone backlit keyboard, 2MP webcam and Creative Sound Blaster audio are standard. It’s available with a 1080p matte TN non-touch panel or a glossy PLS 4K panel with G-Sync.
