MSI GS63VR Stealth Pro (with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060) Review

Lisa Gade reviews the new MSI GS63VR Stealth Pro, a 15.6” slim and light gaming laptop with the new Pascal generation NVIDIA GTX 1060 6GB DDR5 dedicated graphics. Graphics performance is fantastic and this is faster than the outgoing top GTX 980M card! Even more impressive, this 3.96 lb. laptop is extremely thin and light- rivaling the Dell XPS 15 but with much more gaming horsepower. Our review loaner came from www.xoticpc.com and has their optional lid decals and logo. They offer customization and upgrades for the gaming laptops they sell- from carbon fiber skins to RAM and SSD upgrades.

The laptop starts at $1,799 with a 1920 x 1080 matte IPS display, a 45 watt Intel Skylake 6th gen Core i7-6700HQ quad core processor, Intel HD 530 graphics switchable via NVIDIA Optimus with GTX 1060 dedicated graphics card (VR ready). It has 16 gigs of DDR4 RAM, a 256 gig PCIe SSD, 1TB HDD, Killer Ethernet and WiFi 802.11ac. It has a backlit RGB programable SteelSeries keyboard and 1080p webcam. Upgrading to the 4K matte IPS display adds $200. The Stealth Pro 15.6” has an impressive number of ports for a thin and light, including Thunderbolt 3/USB-C 3.1 port and Ethernet.

Lenovo ThinkPad 13 Chromebook Review

Lisa Gade reviews Lenovo's new business-oriented Chromebook, the ThinkPad 13 Chromebook, which shares much of the same hardware with its Windows 10 sibling, the ThinkPad 13. The ThinkPad 13 Chromebook has a 13.3” non-touch matte display, in your choice of 720p or 1080p resolution. It's available with unusually powerful CPUs for a Chromebook, with the higher end models having Intel Core i3-6100U and Core i5-6300U dual core processors. The base model ships with the more typical 1.6 GHz Intel Celeron 3855U.

The 3.2 lb. laptop is available with 4 or 8 gigs of DDR3L RAM and 16 or 32 gigs of eMMC storage. It has a 720p webcam, excellent ThinkPad keyboard (not backlit) and dual band Intel 7265N WiFi with Bluetooth 4.0. It meets 12 MIL-STD810 durability tests. The price starts around $385 and our high end model with Core i5, 8 gigs RAM, 32 gigs of storage and a full HD display is $850.

Huawei Honor 8 Review

Lisa Gade reviews the Honor 8, Huawei's latest Android smartphone in their relatively affordable Honor line. This is a US-friendly unlocked 4G LTE GSM phone that supports AT&T and T-Mobile as well as many smaller carriers in the US and overseas carriers. It supports LTE bands 1/2/3/4/5/7/8/12/17/20 with CAT6 LTE and VoLTE. The Honor 8 is clad in glass and aluminum and it has a 5.2” full HD display with wide color gamut. This is one of the few phones with an IR blaster AV remote control.

The Honor 8 runs Android 6 Marshmallow with Huawei's EMUI 4.1 UI. It uses their own hisilicon Kirin 950 octa-core processor and it has 4 gigs of RAM and your choice of 32 or 64 gigs of storage plus a microSD card slot compatible with cards up to 128 gigs. The phone has an 8MP front camera and 12MP dual rear cameras, much like the more expensive Huawei P9. It has dual band WiFi 802.11ac, Bluetooth, NFC and a GPS. The 32 gig model is $399 and the 4 gig model is $449. Pre-orders start August 26, 2016 and it ships September 2.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 Review

Lisa Gade reviews the Samsung Galaxy Note 7, Samsung's flagship for 2016 that replaces the Galaxy Note 5 (there is no Note 6!). The Note 7 has a 5.7” Super AMOLED 2560 x 1440 display that supports touch and the included S Pen (Wacom EMR active digitizer) with 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity. The display's sides are curved and the phone is made of Gorilla Glass 5 and metal. Like recent competing high end Android smartphones, it has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 quad core CPU with Adreno 530 graphics. It has 4 gigs of RAM and 64 gigs of internal storage plus a microSD card slot compatible with cards up to 256 gigs.

The phone has myriad features including IP68 water resistance, both a fingerprint and iris scanner, LTE 4G, WiFi calling, VoLTE, NFC, fast charging over USB-C and fast wireless charging. It has the same excellent cameras as the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge: 12MP rear with 4K video recording and a front 5MP camera. This Android 6 Marshmallow phone with a much improved TouchWiz UI lists for $879 in the US and it's available in silver, black, coral blue (gold available outside the US in some countries).

Lenovo ThinkPad P40 Review

Lisa Gade reviews the Lenovo ThinkPad P40, a rare 2-in-1 convertible 14.1” mobile workstation. The ThinkPad P40 is largely a rebadged ThinkPad Yoga 460 (or ThinkPad Yoga 14, as it's still called in Best Buy stores). It adds NVIDIA Quadro M500M 2GB DDR5 dedicated graphics, a very good WQHD 2560 x 1440 IPS display option and a fingerprint reader to the consumer oriented Yoga 460 formula. It starts at $1,484 with the 1080p display and $1,722 with the WQHD display.

The P40 supports both touch and pen, and Lenovo's small pen is included in the built-in silo (you can buy a larger ThinkPad Pro pen for $40). This is the same Wacom AES digitizer and pen with 2,048 levels of pressure sensitivity and palm rejection that we've reviewed In the ThinkPad X1 Yoga, ThinkPad Yoga 260 and Yoga 460. The 3.96 lb. (1.79kg) convertible laptop ships with Intel Skylake 6th gen Core i7 dual core 15 watt CPU and 8 or 16 gigs of DDR3 RAM in one RAM slot. It has a 2.5” SATA3 SSD in your choice of 256 or 512 gig capacities. Intel 8260AC dual band WiFi 802.11ac with Bluetooth is standard, as is a 720p webcam.

Dell Inspiron 17 7000 (7778) 2-in-1 Laptop Review

Lisa Gade reviews a truly big screen Windows 10 convertible laptop, the Dell Inspiron 17 7778 with a 17.3” 1920 x 1080 full HD touch screen. Though not everyone might want a convertible this large, it has applications for multiplayer casual gaming, DJ, playing virtual music instruments, and watching movies and viewing/editing photos in a big screen fashion.

Despite the big footprint, this is a relatively slim and light 17” laptop that weighs 6.2 lbs. (2.77 kg) and is 0.89” (22.6mm) thick. It's a light load compared to 17” notebooks from a few years back. The 2-in-1 is available with Intel Skylake 6th generation dual core 15 watt Core i5 and Core i7 CPUs, just like smaller Inspiron 7000 series models. It has NVIDIA 940MX 2GB DDR5 dedicated graphics. The Dell has 2 RAM slots for 8 to 16 gigs of DDR4 memory (you could upgrade to 32 gigs). It has both an M.2 SSD slot and a 2.5” drive bay. Pricing starts at $899 and our nicely configured Core i7 model with an SSD and HDD lists for $1,149.

2016 Dell Inspiron 7000 (7368) Review

Lisa Gade reviews the latest refresh of the Dell Inspiron 13 7000, released in the summer of 2016. The 7000 series is the top of the Inspiron line, but the price for a well-equipped machine is relatively reasonable at $749. This is a 13.3” 2-in-1 Windows 10 onvertible with a 360 degree hinge and a 1920 x 1080 IPS touch screen. It weighs 3.68 lbs. (1.75 kg) and has an aluminum casing.

The laptop is available Intel Skylake 6th generation Core i5-6200U and Core i7-6500U dual core, 15 watt CPUs with Intel HD 520 graphics. It has two DDR4 RAM slots and starts with 8 gigs of RAM. An M.2 256 gig SSD is standard and you can order it with a 512 gig SSD. It has a backlit keyboard and an infrared camera that works with Windows Hello facial recognition for login.

Acer Switch Alpha 12 Review

Lisa Gade reviews the latest MS Surface Pro 4 competitor, and one of the first to ship with Intel Skylake Core i5 and i7 CPUs rather than Core M- the Acer Switch Alpha 12. Despite the relatively low price- our Core i5 with 8 gigs RAM, 256 gig SS with keyboard and pen sells for $750 ($699 at Costco), the Acer has a slim aluminum casing, high quality IPS 2160 x 1440 display with touch and pen support and liquid cooling.

The tablet's included backlit keyboard is a near direct copy of the Surface Type Cover, and that's not a bad thing. It weighs 2.76 lbs. with keyboard cover and this Windows tablet is 0.6” thick. It has dual band WiFi 802.11ac with Bluetooth, a 2MP front camera and 5MP rear camera.

Bluboo Maya Unlocked Android Phone Review

Lisa Gade reviews the Bluboo Maya unlocked GSM dual SIM Android smartphone with 3G (but not 4G LTE) for AT&T on the 850 and 1900MHz bands. The phone will work with any GSM carrier for voice and 2G data. The list price is just $99 and Amazon sells it for $89 (there are also mainland China and Hong Kong versions on importer websites, so pay attention to the 3G bands when buying). Bluboo is a Chinese company and despite the similar name, is a different company from Blu.

The phone has a 5.5" IPS 1280 x 720 display, and it runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow on the low end 1.3 GHz MediaTek MT6580A quad core CPU with MALI 400 graphics. It has 2 gigs of RAM, 16 gigs of internal storage and a microSD card slot. The Maya has an 8MP front camera and a 13MP rear camera with Sony sensor. It has a 3,000 mAh removable battery, single band WiFi 802.11n, Bluetooth and a GPS but no NFC or fingerprint scanner.
